You can find both free and subscription memberships for website monitoring tools that you’ll be ready to use with just a few steps. We’re going to review seven of the best website monitoring tools available.
7 Best Website Monitoring Services
Pingdom – Free Trial and Paid Versions
- Standard – $42.12 a month; 50 monitors, public status page (PSP). And 1-minute monitoring intervals,
- Advanced – $82.45 monthly; 80 monitors, 1-minute monitoring intervals, status page
- Premium – $228.25 monthly; 250 monitors, multi-user access, unlimited logs, 1-minute monitoring intervals, PSP
With Pingdom’s plans, you get 1-minute monitoring intervals, public status pages, and multiple monitoring. There’s also the Enterprise plan that allows from 500k up to five million views each month.
Pingdom knows that you don’t have time to monitor your site all the time, and you don’t want to lose business because too much traffic is coming to your site and forcing your website availability to experience downtime.
You do have access to tools like page speed tests for your site. But if you want the best features, you’ll need to sign up for one of the premium plans. Pingdom analyzes your site’s uptime, as well as performance. They do this by using servers from around the world to test your site. If there’s something wrong, you get an alert.
You also get real user monitoring feedback, which lets you figure out what your users experience when they come to your site, from website speed to broken images. You’ll see where the problems are so you can get them fixed before you lose too many customers. You can also set up API monitoring.
Pingdom has plenty of benefits, but there are a few common complaints regarding this website monitoring app. For instance, the SMS integrations can be wonky, there are no monitoring locations from Asia-Pacific, and it doesn’t provide detailed information for mobile traffic. But Pingdom is an excellent tool for those on a budget.

You’ll have a positive user experience with StatusCake’s plans, whether you choose the paid versions with a ton of more features or the free version, which gives you plenty of bang for no cost. Each paid plan lets you have a week’s trial, so you can see how things work before you commit.

Each package consists of two parts, how often your site is monitored and how many completed tasks. We’ve demonstrated in the bullet list how packages can differ.
Naturally, you’ll pay a higher cost with the Premium package for $39.98 since you are getting more frequent testing done.
DotCom-Monitor lets you try the whole platform with a free 30-day trial, so you can decide from experience what features you’ll need to work for your site. Montastic – Free and Paid Versions
- Free – 9 monitors, with 30-minute monitoring intervals
- $49 a month – 500 monitors, and 5-minute intervals
Montastic has multiple plans, not including free or Premium ($49 a month) versions. You get the option to tweak your package, depending on what features you’ll need.
This website monitoring software is a great monitoring solution for webmasters, especially if you do not want to pay for your tools. The free option is pretty basic, but it’s a great tool if you need alerts if your site suffers downtime. Experienced webmasters might not like the fact that you don’t get a dashboard that lets you change your features. They only excel at sending notifications if your site is experiencing problems.
With the free package, your site gets monitored at 30-minute rotations. We do want to point out that there are free versions with other companies that offer quicker intervals and more features. But if you have your sites set on Montastic, you can get faster intervals by upgrading to a paid version. It’ll also let you monitor different URLs.
You get emails anytime your site experiences downtime, as well as when the site comes back online. You also get notifications regarding keywords. Montastic works with all port numbers and is compatible with Android, Mac, and Androids widgets.
Montastic isn’t the best of the monitoring software available, especially if you plan to pay for your plan. But if you’re just starting with a website and don’t need a lot of monitoring for your site, you might find value with the free version.
New Relic – Free Trial, Paid Versions
- $12.50 a month – basic monitoring
- $25 a month – advanced monitoring
With New Relic, you don’t experience limits with monitors. Your costs will depend on how many hosts there are or the size of the environment.
This company relies on cloud-based software, which tracks your application and site performance. New Relic uses SaaS (software as a service) technology. This company is popular for offering APM (application performance monitoring) services, but also monitors synthetics, browsers, and infrastructure.
You can install applications using eight different languages by installing a corresponding agent, including Microsoft.NET, C SDK, Go, Ruby, Java, Python, PHP, and Node.js.
You’ll get detailed application performance information, including uptime and page load speed using APM monitoring. You even get error reports when things go wrong. There’s also filterable Error Traces and Analytics, and database monitoring. You also get error rates – the percent of errors during a specific time – and throughput – requests per minute.
Compared to other website monitoring companies, NewRelic can be challenging to use for novices and even some experienced users. You can expect to need a lot of learning curves to figure out how to navigate through New Relic’s system. Maybe that’s why you get to try the system for 14 days for free before purchasing a plan. But overall, New Relic offers excellent monitoring solutions.
Uptime Robot – Free and Paid
- Free – 50 monitors, logs for two months, and 5-minute monitoring intervals
- Premium for $129 a month – 1000 monitors, 160 credits for SMS, 1-minute monitoring intervals, and logs for 24 months
Premium site monitoring tools with Uptime Robot come with 50 to 20k monitors, depending on the plan you choose. As expected, the more monitors you want, the more you’ll pay.
But UptimeRobot has one of the best free website monitoring tools available. Since 2010, Uptime Robot customers have been able to use these free resources to monitor their sites, without ever experiencing any surprise costs. That’s not to say Uptime Robot doesn’t offer premium features, cause they certainly do.
Uptime Robot will run site monitoring at five minutes intervals and provide a notification if you’re experiencing downtime. You have limits with what you get with the free version, but you get more with premium. Uptime Robot has central monitoring locations in Dallas, TX, but there are also a few Uptime Robot servers worldwide. With premium monitoring, there are more servers to monitor downtime.
A free robot uptime account gives you access to the logs for the last two months, which lets you compare the changes your site goes through to pinpoint what is working and what isn’t. It also enables you to watch a max of fifty sites.
Uptime-Robot is an excellent free choice with quite a lot of beneficial features. But as with anything free, you won’t get the best quality. There are limited options, including no alert or page insights, to show your site’s speed.

Which is the Best? What Do We Recommend?
Unfortunately, we can’t tell you which site monitoring tool is the best, because they’re all great in their own way. Your decision should be based on your monitoring needs and not what everyone else loves.
But we will tell you which ones we think are the most worth your while. If you want free tools to monitor your web performance, we suggest StatusCake or Uptime Robot. Both of these offer enough features to keep an eye on your site without having to come out of pocket. Free options are a great way to sample different elements to see which ones you need.
DocCom-Monitor offers the most comprehensive features, but it can be more challenging to navigate. Pingdom has an excellent user interface, but there are some faults.
Naturally, premium options give you better features and more accurate data. If your site is experiencing a lot of problems, you’d be better off paying for a service. It can be costly to pay for premium services, so try to find out which features you can’t live without and build a plan around those, so you aren’t over-paying.
But not everyone needs all the advanced features, so you can undoubtedly survive using a free service if you’re just starting and don’t have the budget yet to pay for premium website monitoring. Do your research to find out which tool works best for you. We always recommend starting with the free options to explore your needs before you jump into purchasing a plan.
